A men discus Olympic final without a German and an American among the top 6 , and of course on the podium , is quite a rarity . And a Swedish double is even more exceptional . Even if Daniel STAHL was seen as a strong favorite . In fact , after the 2nd round , the Swedish giant was in the lead for good with 68.90m . The mass was over in spite of the efforts of the Austrian Lukas WEISSHAIDINGER and even more of the Australian Matthew DENNY who was the real trouble maker of the competition , getting all his throws over 65m and scoring a PB at 67,02m , unfortunately 5cm too short from WEISSHAIDINGER . And no medal for him , because the 2nd Swede Simon PETTERSSON finally picked the Silver in his 5th throw at 67.39m for a unique Swedish double. The deception of the competition came from the 2nd favorite Kristjan CEH , a 70m thrower who was expected to challenge STAHL , but CEH , the youngest , possibly too tensed, did not throw well and had to give up his hopes with only 66.67m . The American MATTIS , 8th, was his country only survivor to reach for the final top 8 and the 1st German only finished 10th !!! You had to throw over 63m to make the top 8 . Not the end of the world for throwers who all had Pbs over 65m , but , yes , we know that the wind conditions in those big stadiums are not always ideal. The most important is then to make safe throws knowing that you will always be tempted to try too hard considering the extra stress specific to the Olympics . We can also blame the stupid qualification system which allowed ”has been” out of form competitors to take part in the place of much better and recent performing ones who did not had as many opportunities to score ”ranking points” like the US or the European. I am thinking at the young New Zealander Connor BELL (PB 64.29m) . This idiotic unfair system must be changed .Available documents : 1-Vid 1 Mauricio ORTEGA 63.51m-X-63.87m-X -2-Vid 2 Sam MATTIS 63.88m-63.14m-X-62.39m-X -3- Vid 3 Chad WRIGHT 61.42m-62.56m -4- Vid 4 Daniel JASINSKI 62.44m-X -5-Vid 5 Clemens PRUFER 60.73m-X -6- Vid 6 Ola ISENE STUNES 61.18m-XAvailable documents : 1-Vid 1 Mauricio ORTEGA 63.51m-X-63.87m-X -2-Vid 2 Sam MATTIS 63.88m-63.14m-X-62.39m-X -3- Vid 3 Chad WRIGHT 61.42m-62.56m -4- Vid 4 Daniel JASINSKI 62.44m-X -5-Vid 5 Clemens PRUFER 60.73m-X -6- Vid 6 Ola ISENE STUNES 61.18m-X
