There are every year some 300 young U 18 athletes who are registered in the world top lists with performances over 16m .An age group where New Zealand has usually some good prospects and still hold the world record with the 24.45m performance of Jacko GILL in 2011. This year there are already 2 throwers who have achieved this distance . One , Connor BRADY , 16 years, is more looking to become a combined event athlete and  has already a 3 years training background in athletics (Hurdles-Jumps-Sprint).  In the shot put he made a constant progression (2023 12.99m , 2024  14.43m , 2025 16.26m). He is coached by Walter GILL in the throwing events . The other , Adam LEECE , 17 years, is a complete new comer on the NZL shot put scene as he was first involved in the rowing sport representing his school to win the NZL champs . Now he has started training in the throwing events only last June , 4 month ago, starting with a modest 12.50m PB in the shot put .He is now at 16.70m and seriously thinking he could get to 18m before the end of the year !!! A rather rare progression which is not without reminding us of the young Jacko GILL progressing at a rate of 1m per month at this age.

The interest of this chapter and of the comparative analysis , is that these 2 ”beginners” have already choose different technical approaches of the rotational shot put technique and it will be very interesting to see their evolution and progresses in the next 3 months . Both are also involved and performing in other events  and we don’t know for the moment if the shot put is going to become a first or a second choice in their future throwing careers .
