On the making

Adam LEECE is one of the rare young New Zealanders who doesn’t play rugby to try to become an ALL BLACK . In fact he was first interested in the school rowing competitions (Rowing is also a sport where NZL is among the best countries in the world !) . Then he got a taste of athletics, liked it ,  and decided than he would become a decathlete . But it’s rather difficult to find a multiple coaching and he was advised to join our young throwers development group at the Millenium . At the time his 5kg shot put PB was about 12.50m and he was looking better in the discus with a decent 46m PB with 1.5kg. This was last June 2025 , just 7 months ago.

And this is where our story started . The progresses were so fast (See the PDF Document) that it became evident that SOMETHING SERIOUS had to be done with this guy in the throwing events . And the would be decathlete became in a matter of half a year , one of the very best young throwers of the country , finishing his 2025 year with a 17.88m PB  with 5kg (at the progress rate of nearly 1m per month !!!) before moving in the U20 age group.

One could have though : ” Now that’s fine , certainly a spectacular progression which can sometimes be seen in the young age groups , but this is not going to last long at this pace and he will slow down when having to deal with heavier implements and , like most ”normal” young throwers , he will need time to adapt , at least 1 year before reproducing the same distances with the 6kg that he did with the 5kg”.

In fact …he needed only …6 more weeks to adapt to the 6kg !!!  scoring PB after PB , the last one 17.69m on 14th February …was just 31cm short of the qualification standard required for the coming U20 world champs in August .

And ,this is certainly not the end of the story ….There is another good U20 thrower in the country (Manaia CHRISTIANSEN 19 y 18.79m) and the next NZL champs in March between the two will be decisive >
