Ham 55 Coaching young athletes: Sacha FU OUGHTON 13 years 44.72m 3kg

Most people believe that the hammer throw is the most difficult of all the throwing events . I don’t agree …it is indeed the easiest to learn and to coach . Of course you have to know and apply some simple principles and the proper approach and you will be surprised on how fast you are improving and how  easy it is !

Here are some of these principles :

-Never fight with the hammer , let it do the job

-Build a partnership

-A good posture is the most important technical point

-Looking for range is the 2nd most important point : Get the hammer away from you !

-Never pull with your arms : Push with a dominant right arm

-Don’t try to TURN . Just go right and left …and it’s the hammer which will turn around you

-Always face the hammer

-It is easier and more efficient to accelerate downhill than uphill (think at the bicycle riding principle)

In this chapter, we feature a very young girl  (Sacha 13 years) who , in a matter of just 5 months and some 20 short sessions ,improved  from 25m to nearly 45m . She has acquired not only the ”hammer virus” but quite a remarkable technique at this age which will probably allow her for more progresses in the months to come . She is a great example that the hammer throw maybe not only the easiest throw to learn (If properly done) but also the safest for a young body and the most enjoyable.
